Howard Backen
FOUNDING ARCHITECT
Howard Backen’s passion for design and community has set a strong foundation that guides us forward at Backen & Backen. From the founding of his first firm, BAR, in 1967 to the creation of Backen & Backen with his wife, Ann, and the long-time support of the firm’s principals, Howard’s impact on architecture and the spaces he shaped is profound. Known for his warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication, Howard approached every project with a deep sense of purpose. His belief in the harmony between design, nature, and well-being has left a lasting legacy—one that resonates through each structure he created and the team he influenced.
While we deeply feel the loss of Howard, we find inspiration in the legacy he left us. His spirit continues to motivate our team, bringing care, innovation, and excellence in architectural creativity and environmental stewardship to every project. Under the direction of Ann Backen and our new generation of partners—the longstanding principals with a combined 75 years of experience, John Taft, Tony Selko, and Tom Spoja—we are honored to carry Howard’s work forward.
The future at Backen & Backen is bright as we build on the foundation he laid, remaining committed to his ideals and striving to make a positive impact on the world around us.
